Concept Introductions: This game is easier to work with than Sonic's last two 8-bit outings.
Not only can the Blue Blur use his Spin Dash this time, but he also has the Super Peel Out, known here as the Strike Dash. It works the same way here, but you're granted a small moment of invincibility from the initial dash. That being said, it's no Super Boost, so don't expect to mow down enemies with this.
A few new powerups are available for Sonic to use, too. First, there's the Rocket Shoes. These babies allow Sonic to rocket through the air very quickly. Naturally, they wear off after a while. Second, there's the Pogo Spring. Break it out, and Sonic can bounce around on his very own spring anywhere he wants, until he jumps off, bumps into something or reaches the end of the zone.
The Special Stages are back, but take a turn for the original. To get to them, Sonic has to collect 100 rings. When he does, he's whisked away to a different stage for each Chaos Emerald (six once more). Seriously, don't expect any halfpipes or whatnot here. You'll be going through a different kind of course every time you need an Emerald, so stay sharp.
While Tails is available to play as, his options are (predictably) limited. While he can fly and use the Pogo Spring, and has more lives and continues to use, he can't access the Special Stages or the Rocket Shoes. Oh well.
Concept Deductions: Things are done a bit differently here. Bosses are challenging without being cheap, you're not forced to search high and low for the Chaos Emeralds. Both changes make gameplay more enjoyable.
Main Framework: Standard Sonic fare, straightforward and vibrant.
Storyline:
Eggman's done it! He's finally recovered the Chaos Emeralds…sorta! Before he could use them, they flipped out and scattered across the dimensions. The doc managed to hold on to the red Emerald, but the flux created by the rest is causing South Island to sink into the ocean! Sonic and Tails take it upon themselves to get the Chaos Emeralds back and whoop Dr. Robotnik once more!
Personal Criticism/Opinion (by Ryan the Game Master):
Finally, a Sonic Game Gear game I can play that isn't irritating. Everything's better here: the graphics, the gameplay and we can play as Tails. There are more options for fun times all around. All in all, this is where Sonic finally hit his stride on the Game Gear.
GAMER'S PERSPECTIVE:
Replay value? Well, there are the Chaos Emeralds to go after and you can use Tails. Not much after that, though.
Graphics? An improvement this time. Everything is more detailed and Sonic and Tails look better.
Music & Sound Effects? Same kind of music. Nothing to write home about.
Storyline? Hmph. As flat as ever.
OVERALL RANK? I give Sonic Chaos a
